ISNA's Mission

Mission Statement
ISNA Canada is a broad-based unity of Muslims and Islamic organizations committed to the mission and movement of Islam: nurturing a way of life in the light of the guidance from the Qur’an and Sunnah for establishing a vibrant presence of Muslims in Canada. ISNA exists as a platform for all Muslims who share its mission and are dedicated to serving the needs of Muslims and Muslim communities.

Introduction
How do we please Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala? How do we organize ourselves? What priorities do we set? What actions do we engage in so that Allah will bless us with His mercy and grace, bless us with success in this life and the Hereafter? ISNA has a long history of Islamic work, and it has endeavored to seek the pleasure of Allah. With the passage of time, however, it is essential to come refresh our outlook, and re-think and re-state our identity and direction. This mission statement presented here may, therefore, not quite reflect our reality today. The purpose of the statement is to enunciate ISNA’s vision, to refine ISNA’s identity and character, its direction and goals. Above all we need to challenge and commit ourselves in order to make this vision a vivid reality in our life and in the life of those around us.

Explanation of the Mission Statement

  1. ISNA is a grassroots, community-based organization. ISNA, therefore, is the collective will of the individuals and communities that endeavor on the local level to build an Islamic way of life.
  2. ISNA is a platform for fulfillment of Allah’s command: "Hold fast to the rope of Allah all together and be not divided among yourselves" (3:103). The task of ISNA is to reach out and extend the platform of unity to all Muslims who are committed to the mission and movement of Islam.
  3. ISNA is an Islamic organization for all world citizens. However, its particular mission is focused on building an Islamic way of life in North America. ISNA’s task is to plant the "good word" of Islam in the soil of North America, so that the "good tree" might grow, prosper and bring benefit to the land in which it grows.
  4. ISNA is open to all Muslims, regardless of their ethnic, economic, language or racial background. In fact, Muslims of North America form a global rainbow of backgrounds. ISNA welcomes the participation of all segments of this diverse Muslim population and encourages their voice and presence in ISNA’s activities. In particular ISNA ensures that American Muslims, who have reverted to Islam and those who were born here, play an important role in ISNA.
  5. ISNA is an Islamic movement in the sense that it endeavors to implement the characteristics of the Prophet’s movement for establish Islam by having firm faith in Allah Almighty and His Messenger (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him). This goal is to be achieved by commitment to Islam, engaging in moving forward towards the desired goals, displaying brotherhood in relations with one another and discipline in all actions. Accompanying these characteristics is also the necessary emphasis on training, action and leadership.
  6. ISNA is founded on the teachings of Qur’an and Sunnah. Correct faith and correct understanding and practice of Shari’ah are the guiding principles of right and wrong. ISNA is, therefore, both inclusive and exclusive: inclusive in that it seeks the unity of all Muslims; exclusive in that the Muslim unity must be based on correct faith and sincere commitment to Islam as a total way of life.
  7. ISNA is dedicated to nurturing the Islamic personality—the personality of a Muslim who is sincere, spiritual, knowledgeable, resolute, and hard working; a Muslim who practices Islam completely at all times and places. Such an individual is the starting point and the building block of all Islamic activity.
  8. ISNA is dedicated to assisting in the growth of strong, viable, visible, vocal, and effective Muslim communities on the local level. The backbone of Islamic work in North America is the hundreds of local Muslim communities. When Muslim communities are healthy and strong, the positive and uplifting impact of the Muslim presence will be felt throughout North America. ISNA is, therefore, committed to the communities by helping them to meet the religious, educational, social, and economic needs of their members.
  9. ISNA is dedicated to working on the national level to promote and protect the Muslims interests in North America. Within its character as a nonprofit organization, ISNA voices Muslim concerns and takes necessary actions to realize the religious, social, cultural, educational, economic and political rights of Muslims in North America.
  10. ISNA is dedicated to da’wah, which means reaching out to convey the clear message of Islam, speaking out against all wrongs and injustices, advocating Islamic solutions to societal problems and becoming involved in effecting righteous change in North America.
